Ahoghill telephone exchange is in Ballymena Road, Ahoghill, Ballymena BT42 1JX.

It came into service around early 1981, replacing a UAX in Portglenone Road, when most lines became Ahoghill 871*** numbers

Its telephone codes include 028-25.

Its former dialling code was 01266-87, previously 026 687.

Ahoghill former ATE

The former Ahoghill telephone exchange is believed to survive at 18 Portglenone Road, Ahoghill, Ballymena BT42 1LQ.

The first Ahoghill ATE was an RAX5 which opened on the morning of Wednesday 9 March 1932 to replace a manual exchange. Its successor closed around 1981 and the building was advertised for sale later that year,

Its dialling code was 026 687.

Aughafatten ATE

Aughafatten telephone exchange is in Camlough Road, Broughshane, Ballymena BT43 7JN.

The first exchange, still on the site, was a UAX12 which opened around 1938 to replace a manual exchange.

Its telephone codes include 028-25.

Its former dialling code was 01266-84, previously 026 684.

Ballymena ATE

Ballymena telephone exchange is at 35 Trostan Avenue, Ballymena BT43 7BW

It was officially opened by prime minister Terence O’Neill on 11 July 1963, replacing an earlier ATE in the post office. It was converted to digital working on 18 February 1988.

Its telephone codes include 028-25.

Its former dialling code included 01266-4, 01266-31, 01266-63 and 01266-66, previously 0266.

Ballymena former ATE

Ballymena former ATE

The first Ballymena ATE was in the former post office (seen here on the right behind the GPO telephones van) in Wellington Street, Ballymena (now BT43 6AA).

It came into service at 1.30pm on 27 June 1936 replacing a manual exchange in the post office (which itself had replaced a National Telephone Company exchange opened  in Bridge Street in December 1903).  It closed in 1963.

Broughshane ATE

Broughshane telephone exchange is located in Riverside, Broughshane, Ballymena BT42 4RZ.

It came into service in January 1980, replacing an earlier exchange at 7 Main Street when most lines became Broughshane 861*** numbers.

Its telephone codes include 028-25.

Its former dialling code was 01266-86, previously 026 686.

Broughshane former ATE

The former Broughshane telephone exchange was at 7 Main Street, Broughshane, Ballymena BT42 4JW.

The first Broughshane ATE was a UAX12 which replaced a manual exchange at 11 am on 25 August 1937. It was succeeded in the late 1950s by an exchange in a B1 type building, seen here, which was demolished in the late 2010s.

Its dialling code was 026 686.

Cullybackey ATE

Cullybackey telephone exchange is located in Fernaghy Road, Cullybackey, Ballymena BT42 1EA.

It came into service on 26 October 1978. It was converted to digital working on 28 April 1994.

The first Cullybackey ATE was a UAX12, now demolished,  to the south side of Main Street. It was replaced in the late 1950s.

Cullybackey’s telephone codes include 028-25.

Its former dialling code was 01266-88, previously 026 688.

The dialling code of its predecessor exchange was 026 688.

Glarryford ATE

Glarryford telephone exchange is in Frosses Road, Glarryford, Ballymena BT44 9QF.

The smaller building on the site housed a UAX12 which came into service in the late 1930s. The exchange was targetted by bombers in 1957, 1972, 1976, 1981 and 1982, the 1972 attack destroying part of it and cutting 200 lines.

Its telephone codes include 028-25.

Its former dialling code was 01266-685, previously 026 685.

Glenwherry telephone exchange is located in Church Road, Glenwherry, Ballymena BT42 3EJ.

The first telephone service here was provided by a country satellite exchange, before the present exchange was opened as a UAX in the late 1950s.

Its telephone codes include 028-25.

Its former dialling code was 01266-83, previously 026 683.

Kells ATE

Kells telephone exchange is in Greenfield Road, Kells, Ballymena BT42 3JL.

It came into service in 1980 to replace a UAX, the first of which was opened, possibly in Fernisky Road, on 22 February 1940.

Its telephone codes include 028-25.

The dialling code was 01266-89, previously 026 689.

Portglenone ATE

Portglenone telephone exchange is in Ballymena Road, Portglenone, Ballymena BT44 8BL.

The first ATE here was a UAX12 (location unknown to us, but sold off in 1959) which replaced a manual exchange in the late 1930s. The present exchange came into service at 1pm on Wednesday 14 September 1977.

Its telephone codes include 028-25.

The former dialling code was 01266-82, previously 026 682.
