Stoke introduction

Introduction

The telephone service arrived in The Potteries in April 1885 when the National Telephone Company opened the Hanley exchange in Cheapside, with smaller exchanges in Burslem and Stoke. Soon afterwards, Longton and Newcastle exchanges were opened. Around 1900, the company build its headquarters in a magnificent Renaissance-style building which survives in Trinity Street. ‘Telephone Buildings’ later became home to the central unit of the towns’ automatic system – seven exchanges in a linked numbering scheme which opened in 1927.
