The eleven BT Telephone Exchanges (and fourteen former) in the Bath (01225) telephone area
In 1893 it was moved to 11 Northgate Street, where it occupied the  floors above Cooling’s seed merchants (seen here in a 1908 photograph from BT Archives). Bath former ATE
The former Bath telephone exchange is located at the old post office, 24 New Bond St, Bath BA1 1BA.
The automatic equipment was housed on the first floor and came into service at 2pm on Saturday 26 Jan 1929, along with Batheaston exchange.
It took over the lines of the former magneto exchange in Northgate Street. It closed on 1 April 1967.

Bath Kingsmead ATE
Bath Kingsmead telephone exchange is situated in Monmouth Street, Bath BA1 2AL and mainly covers central and west Bath.
It came into service in March 1967 when lines from Weston exchange were transferred to it. It took over the lines from the former Bath ATE on 1 April.
Its telephone codes include 01225-40, 01225-42, 01225-43 and 01225-46.
Its former dialling code was 0225.

Batheaston ATE
Batheaston telephone exchange is located in Solsbury Lane, Batheaston, Bath BA1 7HB and also covers an area including Bathford and Upper Swainswick.
It came into service in the mid-1970s to replace the former ATE in Penthouse Hill.
The telephone code for this exchange is 01225-85.
Its former dialling code was 0225.

Batheaston former ATE
The former Batheaston telephone exchange is situated in Penthouse Hill, Batheaston, Bath BA1 7EL.
It came into service at 2pm on Saturday 26 Jan 1929, replacing a manual exchange, as part of the Bath linked numbering scheme. The name Batheaston survived until the early 1950s. It closed in the mid-1970s and is now a private house.
Its former dialling code was 0225.

Batheaston former Manual Exchange
The former Batheaston manual exchange was at Fairview (now no 24) The Batch, Batheaston, Bath BA1 7DR. It is seen here in 1909, to the left with the upstairs window boxes.
It was opened by the National Telephone Company in August 1898 and closed when lines were transferred to the new Batheaston ATE on 26 January 1929.

Box ATE
Box telephone exchange is in Bargates, Box, Corsham SN13 8LS and also covers Ashley and Ditteridge.
It possibly came into service in 1979, when Box numbers were prefixed with 742 and the dialling code was changed to 0225, replacing the UAX on the site.
The telephone code for this exchange is 01225-74.
Its former dialling code was 022 121.

Box former ATE
The former Box telephone exchange is situated in Bargates, Box, Corsham SN13 8LS.
It came into service at 1.30pm on Thursday 27 November 1952 to replace a manual exchange and ceased operation in 1979. It is now disused.

 Bradford-0n-Avon ATE
Bradford-on-Avon telephone exchange is in Priory Park, Bradford-on-Avon, BA15 1QX and also covers an area including Westwood and Bradford Leigh.
The telephone code for this exchange is 01225-86.
Its former dialling code was 022 16.

Combe Down ATE
Combe Down telephone exchange is located in Bradford Road, Combe Down, Bath BA2 5BW and also covers an area including South Stoke and Midford.
It came into service as a TXK1 exchange on 2 May 1973, replacing the earlier UAX.
The telephone codes for this exchange are 01225-83 and 01225-84.
Its former dialling code was 022 13.

Combe Down former ATE
The former Combe Down telephone exchange is situated in Combe Road, Combe Down, Bath BA2 5HY.
It came into service around 1934 as a UAX9 Bypath exchange, changing to a UAX14 around 1940. It closed on 2 May 1973 and is now a nursery school.
Its former dialling code was 022 13.

Combe Down former Manual Exchange
The former Combe Down manual exchange was at 3 Trafalgar Place, now 18 Combe Road, Combe Down, Bath BA2 5HY, seen here to the right of the bakery.
It was opened by the National Telephone Company in 1906 and was replaced by an automatic exchange around 1934.

Hawthorn ATE
Hawthorn telephone exchange is situated in Westwells Road, Hawthorn, Corsham SN13 9RA and also covers an area including Neston and Rudloe.
The first Hawthorn exchange was a manual switchboard opened, possibly for military use (it served RAF Colerne), around 1942.
The telephone codes for this exchange is 01225-81.
Its former dialling code was 022 123.

Hilperton former Manual Exchange
The location of the former Hilperton manual telephone exchange is unknown. It was opened by the National Telephone company and photographed in June 1909.
It was closed in 1933 when its lines were re-assigned to two new rural automatic exchanges – North Trowbridge and Keevil (now in the Devizes group) – and to Trowbridge exchange.

Limpley Stoke ATE
Limpley Stoke telephone exchange is situated in Middle Stoke, Limpley Stoke, Bath BA2 7GE and also covers an area including Freshford, Winsley and Monkton Combe.
It came into service as a UAX14 in the 1940s.
The telephone code for this exchange is 01225-72.
Its former dialling code was 022 122.

Marshfield ATE
Marshfield telephone exchange is located in Back Lane, Marshfield, Chippenham SN14 8NQ and also covers an area including Cold Ashton and the Wraxalls.
It came into service at 1pm on Wednesday 26 October 1983, when lines became Bath 891*** numbers.
The telephone code for this exchange is 01225-89.
Its former dialling code was 022 124.

Marshfield former ATE
The former Marshfield telephone exchange is located in Back Lane, Marshfield, Chippenham SN14 8NQ.
It replaced a manual exchange (that opened on 6 July 1925) and closed at 1pm on Wednesday 26 October 1983. It is now a private house.
Its former dialling code was 022 124.

Melksham ATE
Melksham telephone exchange is situated in Church Walk, Melksham SN12 6LY and also covers an area including Bowerhill, Sandridge and Whitley.
It is likely to have came into service in 1972, when numbers were prefixed with 70 and the dialling code was changed to 0225, replacing an earlier UAX, also in Church Walk.
The telephone codes for this exchange are 01225-70 and 01225-79.
The dialling code of its predecessor exchange was 022 15.

Melksham former Manual Exchange
Melksham manual exchange was above Henry White’s drapery store in Melksham town centre (address not known).
It was opened by the National Telephone Company.
The town’s manual exchange was replaced by an auto exchange in Church Walk on 22 January 1952.

Newton St Loe former ATE
The former Newton St Loe telephone exchange is situated in Pennyquick, Newton St Loe, Bath BA2 9BB.
It came into service as a UAX12 around 1938 and closed on 10 November 1971, its lines being transferred to Saltford exchange. It was sold at auction in September 2023 with planning permission for student accommodation.
Its former dialling code was 022 125.

North Trowbridge ATE
North Trowbridge telephone exchange is located in The Midlands, Holt, Trowbridge BA14 6RQ and covers an area including Holt, Staverton and Broughton Gifford.
It possibly came into service in 1972 when the dialling code was changed to 0225 and lines became North Trowbridge 782*** numbers.
The telephone code for this exchange is 01225-71.
Its former dialling code was 022 126.

North Trowbridge former ATE
The former North Trowbridge telephone exchange is located in The Midlands, Holt, Trowbridge BA14 6RQ, just to the south of the current exchange.
It came into service as an RAX5 on 24 November 1933, the area having previously been served in part by Hilperton manual exchange.
The name Holt was not used, to avoid confusion with other exchanges. Â It closed in 1972 and is now a house.
Its dialling code was 022 126.

Saltford ATE
Saltford telephone exchange is situated in Beech Road, Saltford, Bristol BS31 3BE Â and also covers an area including Corston and Newton St Loe.
It came into service in the 1940s to replace a manual exchange.
Its telephone codes include 01225-872 and  01225-873.
Its former dialling code was 022 17.

Saltford former Manual Exchange
The former Saltford manual telephone exchange was at 40 High Street, Saltford, Bristol BS31 3EJ. It was opened by the National Telephone Company in what was then Saltford post office around 1900. The Saltford manual exchange was replaced by a UAX14 in Beech Road in the 1940s.

Trowbridge ATE
Trowbridge telephone exchange is situated in Bythesea Road, Trowbridge BA14 8HR and also covers an area including Southwick, North Bradley and Hilperton.
The first Trowbridge exchange was opened by the National Telephone Company in the 1890s. A manual exchange in Castle Street is said to have served the town from 1902 till the first automatic exchange in Bythesea Road came into service on Wednesday 20 April 1949.
The telephone codes for this exchange include 01225-71, 01225-75, 01225-76 and 01225-77.
Its predecessor’s dialling code was 022 14.

Weston (Bath) former ATE
The former Weston (Bath) telephone exchange is situated at 151 Lockbrooke Road, Bath BA1 3EJ.
It came into service at 2pm on 30 July 1931 as part of the Bath linked numbering scheme, lines becoming Bath numbers on 6 May 1940. The exchange suffered a fire on 13 August 1962 and closed in March 1967 when lines were transferred to Bath Kingsmead exchange. It is currently (2023) vacant and available for rent.
Its former dialling code was 0225.

Weston former Manual Exchange
The former Weston manual exchange was at 14 (now No 29) Newbridge Hill, Bath BA1 3PR.
The National Telephone Company opened the exchange in 1905. It closed in 1931 when it was replaced by the Weston automatic exchange.
