The eight BT Telephone Exchanges (and three former) in the Aboyne-Ballater (01339) telephone area
Up until the late 1980’s Aboyne had the STD code of 0339 and Ballater had the STD code of 0338. In order to free up space for mobile, non-geographic, premium rate and pager services, this area was one of sixteen of the original STD codes with low number use which were merged into fourteen existing ranges so that each area code would cover multiple charge groups

Aboyne Telephone Exchange is located in Station Brae, Aboyne AB34 5HU and serves Aboyne, Birse, Birsemore, Rosehill and the surrounding villages.

The former Aboyne Manual Telephone Exchange was located within the Post Office, Charlestown Road, Aboyne AB34 5EL and served Aboyne, Birse, Birsemore, Rosehill and the surrounding villages.
In 1947 it was recorded as being home to a CBS2 switchboard with 163 lines.

Ballater ATE
Ballater Telephone Exchange is located in Hawthorn Crescent, Ballater AB35 5GJ and serves Ballater, Bridge of Gairn, Bridge of Muick, Milton Gairn and the surrounding villages.
